FBI, cops catch up with Montego Bay kidnappers
Two men who were abducted at gunpoint in Montego Bay, St. James, last Sunday were set free and their abductors apprehended following a daring rescue mission involving the local police, the Royal Bahamas Police Force and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Jamaica has surpassed projected sugar earnings, says James
MONTEGO BAY, St James - Karl James, general manager of Jamaica Cane Products Sales - the company that markets sugar produced locally - said Monday that although the country would not achieve its sugar production target for the 2005/2006 crop, it had surpassed its projected earnings of US$78 million for the season.

According to James, the country had so far earned US$82 million from the export of approximately 136,000 tonnes of sugar. Of that amount, he said, 131,000 tonnes had been sold to the European Union (EU) while the remainder had been shipped to the United States. Continue




Fuss over cleaning of MoBay's North Gully
MONTEGO BAY, St James - The St James Parish Council is upset about the Ministry of Local Government's instructions not to spend any more of the $6.4 million allocated from the Tourism Enhancement fund (TEF) to clean the messy North Gully in Montego Bay.

"There seems to be a concerted effort by central government to undermine our efforts," the city's mayor, Councilor Noel Donaldson said at the regular monthly meeting of the council on Thursday. More

Can anything good come out of troubled Norwood?
NORWOOD, St James, made dubiously famous by a recent series of chilling murders, will be the next community targeted by Sandals Montego Bay for its Sandals Training And Recruitment Tier (START) programme, after similarly troubled Flankers.

Come August 2, the programme will be extended to accommodate 10 unskilled and unemployed youths from the Norwood community, as part of a wider bid to address some of the north coast parish's unemployment and social problems, said Horace Peterkin, general manager of Sandals Montego Bay.

Under the extension, the Norwood youths will be trained in the food and beverage (kitchen, bar and sanitation), engineering (AC/refrigeration, stove technician/plumbing, room technician) and entertainment departments for a period of up to 12 months. Continue




Crimes down in St James, say senior cops
Montego Bay, St James - Two senior police officers last Wednesday night assured local business people that crimes have reduced in this parish despite a recent spate of brutal murders here.

According to Deputy Superintendent Paul Stanton, St James has experienced five less murders than this time last year. ".it may not seem so because of what is taking place," he said in reference to the recent upsurge in murders in the volatile Norwood community. Full Report
